Dr Odwa Gulwa
Medical Director
Dr Odwa Gulwa is the Medical Director at AIEM. With a passion for teaching, technology, and healthcare he has over 13 years’ experience within the medical field. With his medical training and expertise, he is exploring the intersection between healthcare and AI from an African perspective. His special interests include technology-driven medical education and training, flight medicine and traditional healthcare. He obtained his medical training at the University of Pretoria in 2010 and since then has focused on emergency medicine, flight medicine and digital marketing. In May 2021, he completed his traditional healing training. He is a repository where four worlds converge for the holistic healing of the physical, mental, spiritual and vocational.
Mikayla van Welie
Instructor, Course Creator
With a love of emergency medicine and critical care, Mikayla has spent many years both on the road and in the air as an Emergency Care Practitioner, fulfilling her goal of providing best practice to every patient. From being operational, she saw the need for best practice medicine to be taught and since, has obtained her Master’s degree in emergency medicine and has become a “Meducator”, specialising in the ability to teach various advanced life support courses and bringing simulation based learning into the teaching space.
Sharlene Dixon
Locum Instructor, Course Creator
Making her way from the bottom, as a first aider in 2009, Sharlene has excelled in the Emergency Medicine field, specialising in critically ill ICU patients and neonatal emergencies. Now, as an Advanced Life Support Paramedic, she spends her time between working on the frontlines of patient care as well as education. Her passion for education and improving patient care, specifically in the paediatric courses, is tangible by the professional staff she trains. Amongst this busy schedule, Sharlene is a mom of an excited and equally passionate little boy.
Dr Jessica Jane Voerman
Locum Instructor, Course Creator
Dr Voerman MBChB, DipPEC(SA) attended medical school at the University of Cape Town and graduated in 2009. Over the year, Jessica developed a love for emergency medicine, especially in austere and unusual environments. Joining ER Consulting Inc in 2013, Jessica began a career that has seen her achieve her current position of Chief Clinical Officer, where the austere and unusual are not restrictive to clinical excellence due to the development of innovative technology. In addition to being a published author in the Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance Journal, and managing a successful portfolio which includes Telemedicine, Jessica is an instructor with the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) and AIEM. Her clinical passion lies with sharing her knowledge and expertise in telemedicine; advanced paediatric and neonatal life support; and the use of technology (particularly ultrasound) in emergency and critical care.
Dr Roslyn Whittaker
Locum Instructor, Course Creator
Ros joined the ER Consulting Inc team in 2011 with six years of private emergency medicine experience. She holds a DipPEC and instructor status on multiple short emergency medicine courses. Ros is currently involved in special project management for ER Consulting Inc and oversees the Mediclinic and Lenmed emergency departments within the ER Consulting Inc stable. She splits her clinical time between ICU and AIEM and assists with course development along with the AIEM team members. Ros has a keen interest in critical care and improving private emergency medical care.
Dr Ulrich Carshagen
Locum Instructor
Ulrich is a flight doctor with a keen interest in retrieval and pre-hospital medicine. With both fixed-wing and rotor-wing experience, Ulrich strives to provide the highest quality critical care to his patients. In addition, he also works in the Emergency Department and ICU and is very passionate about point-of-care ultrasound. He holds a Dip PEC (CMSA) and Dip RTM (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) and is also part of EMSSA’s faculty for emergency point-of-care ultrasound. Ulrich loves teaching and regularly instructs on a variety of short courses.
Nathanael Block
Instructor, Public Course Creator
An avid instructor at heart, Nathanael has been teaching for over 6 years. He completed his BHSc (Biomed) from Wits in 2020 and has since become a registered assessor and moderator with ETDP-SETA. His passion lies in emergency medicine and providing high-quality pre-hospital emergency care. Knowledge is a powerful tool and if spread correctly, can save many lives. Nate’s excitement is drawn from helping people as an operational medic and applying the skills he has learnt to his patients.
Dr Marietta Nieuwoudt-Carlson
Locum Instructor, Course Creator
Marietta is a senior medical officer and emergency medicine enthusiast from Johannesburg. She describes herself as an avowed resuscitationist, chaser of dreams, difficult airways, and polytrauma. She holds a DipPEC and a passion for point of care ultrasound. You can find her manning the helm at Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada, spending clinical hours on the floor and in ICU. Marietta also locums at SHI's Telemedicine desk and enjoys teaching at AIEM.
Casey
Van Der Walt
Instructor
Casey is a dynamic individual driven with a continuous zest
for life throughout her career, which started at The Western Cape Emergency
Medical Services as an operational ECP and expanded to clinical facilitator at
CPUT. With an infectious enthusiasm, she radiates positivity and brings a sense
of fun to everything she does. Her genuine love for learning and personal
growth is evident in her unwavering commitment to becoming a lifelong learner.
Always seeking new knowledge and experiences, she firmly
believes that learning is not confined to the walls of a classroom but extends
to every aspect of life. Her journey as a lifelong learner has taken her on
diverse paths, allowing her to acquire a broad range of skills and knowledge
across various disciplines.
Casey understand that true inspiration comes from within,
and she wishes to empower those around her to tap into their own passions and
find their unique path to growth.

Dr Steven Holt
CEO, Managing Director, Founder & Majority Shareholder
Founder and majority shareholder of the ER Group of companies, Dr Steven Holt, brings a deep knowledge of the emergency medicine industry to AIEM (Pty) Ltd. He is a registered emergency medicine physician with 20 years’ experience in the emergency medicine sector, incorporating emergency departments and their management, Urgent Care, aviation medicine, telemedicine, training and wilderness medicine.
Ms Susan Sherriff
Executive Director - Marketing and Communication
Susan has been the Marketing Director at First Care Solutions (Pty) Ltd, with the responsibility of marketing, brand management and new product development for First Care Solutions (Pty) Ltd, AIEM (Pty) Ltd and ER Consulting Inc for the last 10 years. Prior to joining the ER Group of companies, she worked in marketing and events for SAP Africa (Pty)Ltd for more than three years where she coordinated and managed exhibitions, staff, client and partner events.
Mr Michael Kirk
Executive Director - Finance and Administration
In 2007 Michael joined ER Consulting Inc in a consulting capacity. A few months later he took on a full-time management position and has since developed the financial and administration divisions of both First Care Solutions (Pty) Ltd and ER Consulting Inc. In 2009 Michael became a shareholder and director in First Care Solutions (Pty) Ltd. Michael now heads up the Corporate Management Service departments of First Care Solutions (Pty) Ltd as an Executive Director and is a non-executive director for AIEM (Pty) Ltd.
Dr Peter Anderson
Executive Director - Clinical
Dr Peter Anderson is a registered Emergency Physician. He is a senior lecturer in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. Born 1973. Primary Degree: MBBCh University of the Witwatersrand (1996), Internship: Grey’s Hospital (1997) Additional Qualifications: Emergency Physician (HPCSA), MSc Med (Emergency Medicine), DIPPEC (SA), ATLS Instructor, Emergency Ultrasound Instructor, AIME Instructor, ACLS, APLS, BLS, AHCP
Dr Izak Maree
Executive Director - Clinical Operations
Dr Izak Maree joined ER Consulting Inc in 2006, becoming a director in 2007. He has completed his MBA at the University of the Witwatersrand Business School.Born 1969. Primary Degree: MBChB University of Pretoria (1993). Internship: Middelburg Provincial Hospital (1994). Additional Qualifications: MBA(Wits), ATLS, ACLS, APLS, BLS, Additional Activities: Fixed Wing Flights — 8, Event Doctor, International Medical Logistics
